Product Description

Outstanding cherryred ceremonial khalat/caftan – a knee-length robe – made from hand loomed old silk and cotton fabrics and displaying striped patterns indicating the village the wearer is from. It is decorated with talismanic coins and pieces of carnelian, a bright red colored stone, believed to protect the wearers from illness (wards off eye disease) and death.

Historically, richly adorned khalats have been used as honorific awards. The word khalat/khilat was also used to denote the ceremony of awarding the honorific robe.

This khalat most likely belonged to a young man’s, given its dimensions.
